Relationship Issues

Relationships: The Center of Everything

Relationship issues aren’t only addressed in couples and family therapy…

Most people need to talk about them in individual therapy, too.

As social creatures, relationships are a huge part of our lives. When they’re not going well, we’re usually not doing very well.

Ever had a problem with a spouse or someone you’re dating?

With a sibling or a parent?

Friends?

Co-workers… or your boss?

Who We Are, What We Need

These are informed by our relationships—whom we relate to and how we relate to them.

Think about yourself and your life…

Are your relationships healthy?

Do they feel good?

Are they toxic?

Do they make you feel more (or less) secure?

Do they help you become who you want to be?

Do frequent arguments make you want to pull your hair out and give up?

Relationships are like a mirror…

They reflect us back to ourselves.

Who we pick reflects our confidence and self-esteem.

How we’re treated reflects how we invite others to treat us.

How we argue and fight reflects our own internal conflicts.

How silent we are in relationships reflects how much we feel silenced (by others and/or ourselves)

Relationship Work in Therapy

Relationships not so good? Now what?

In the therapy, we’ll:

Look at your history with relationships and identify patterns…
Unpack how the past is impacting the present…
Work to heal past hurts in relationships…

Explore your feelings of self-worth and value…
Learn and practice ways of communicating more effectively…

Increase awareness of how your current experiences in relationships are impacting you…
Weed out the things holding you back from getting what you need in your relationships…

You and your relationship are welcome here.

I deeply respect your choice to be who you want to be… and to be in whatever types of relationship(s) you choose, so I work with everyone.

So, whether you’re in a heterosexual relationship…

Or an LGBTQIA+ individual…

Or someone in a polyamorous relationship…

Or someone who doesn’t adhere to societal norms in their relationships,

You are welcome here!

Your partner(s) are welcome, too!

You are welcome to bring your partner(s) (or anyone else) to a session or two with you: siblings, parents, and/or friends.

These sessions help me see how various dynamics are playing out in your relationships. They support your individual work (as opposed to ongoing couples or family counseling).

I often do one or two sessions where an individual brings their partner to a session to get support expressing needs, wants, hopes, etc.

One woman told me that just one of these sessions with her husband started improving her marriage. Then, we continued with her individual therapy to work on reinforcing the positive changes.

Insight and self-awareness are everything…

So, why not use the state of your relationships to help you figure out how to live your best life?

Whether it’s deepening the love you have or taking out the trash, you deserve to feel happy in your relationships.

I’ll support you, cheer you on, and hold you accountable as you transform your relationship through your work in individual therapy.
